Energy News for week ending July 20, 2018

You bought Russian gas | Vineyard Wind Lights Fuse | Millstone Debate Heats Up

Happy Friday afternoon. Based on the amount of stories we found, there doesn’t appear to be a usual summertime shortage of energy news.

Here are a few of interest:

Trump Was Asked About a Russian Gas Shipment To Boston. Here’s What That Tells Us About Energy in New England, WGBH — At Monday’s press conference in Helsinki, President Trump faced a question about a shipment of Russian liquefied natural gas that was sent to Boston in January. The question came from a Russian journalist who pointed out, through an interpreter, that Trump has been critical of a pipeline project that allows Germany to buy gas from Russia. Trump has said it makes Europe a hostage of Russia. “You suggested that you could free Europe from this by supplying American LNG,” the Russian journalist said. He went on to question whether the United States could provide LNG or liquefied natural gas as an alternative. “As far as I know U.S. had to buy … Russian gas for Boston.”

Power line plan lights fuse under Yarmouth residents, Cape Cod Times — A plan by offshore power company Vineyard Wind to bring a high-wattage cable through Lewis Bay and onshore in West Yarmouth is energizing residents, who say that no amount of compensation is worth the damage the project could potentially inflict. “This is not about money,” West Yarmouth resident David Bernstein said at Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting, which was devoted primarily to public comment on the project. “I don’t care if Vineyard Wind gives $10 million a year to the town of Yarmouth. If the bay is killed, it is killed.”

Millstone Power Station debate heats up, The Day — Whether you fear Millstone Power Station could shutter within a few years and create an economic and energy grid crisis, or believe plant owner Dominion Energy is making empty threats about closing before its licenses expire, state regulators want to hear from you…Millstone’s participation in the zero-carbon auction follows years of pushing from Dominion and lawmakers, who are concerned that cheaper, abundantly available natural gas could threaten the plant’s survival in the wholesale energy market.

That’s the quick recap for this week. There are a lot more news items and opinions below. Enjoy and have a great weekend.

Energy News for week ending December 15, 2017

Profitable for decades | Surviving negotiations | Living in the shadows

Happy Friday afternoon!

A few quick news notes before we buzz into the weekend and holiday prep frenzy.

The CT Mirror is reporting that [CT] “State energy officials concluded in a preliminary report released Thursday that the Millstone nuclear power station in Waterford will be profitable through 2035, undercutting its owner’s assertion that Connecticut must change how its electricity is sold or face the early retirement of New England’s largest source of carbon-free power.”

Utility Dive reports “that the speed at which the Republican tax reform bill is being pushed through Congress makes it difficult to assess the details, but at this point it appears that some of the highest profile renewable energy incentives will survive the negotiating process intact.”

If you’re looking for a long read, check out Gatehouse Media’s piece titled, “In the Shadow of Wind Farms.” They describe the article as, “How the wind industry angers landowners and divides communities in pursuit of billions of dollars in subsidies and other incentives.”

Have a great weekend.

Energy News for week ending February 10, 2017

Good Friday Afternoon. On the gas front this week, MassLive reports that the judge involved in the case for the pipeline easement, plans to OK the settlement causing some folks to stage a funeral (Berkshire Eagle). WWLP’s I Team investigates and finds that contractors cause 100’s of gas line accidents each year in Massachusetts; many never call 811.

Not in the New England, but interesting none-the-less is an article from the LA Times saying Californian’s are paying big time for power they don’t need.

CommonWealth Magazine reports this week’s power auction went smoothly, but the Enterprise reports folks at Brockton Power are feeling left out.

In the department of be careful what you wish for, Utility DIVE digs in on an ISO NE report showing that CO2 emissions spiked after Vermont Yankee’s closure. And, the Telegram reports that municipal utilities are crying foul over the new greenhouse gas limits.

Lastly, because it’s still fun to talk about the Patriot’s win, the Bangor Daily News reports their second half comeback lit up New England – literally!

Have a great weekend.

Energy News for week ending January 20, 2017

It’s Friday so it’s time for the weekly energy news. Eversource filed a rate case this week calling for price hikes that the Berkshire Eagle says could “shock” Western MA customers. Shortly after the filing, MA Attorney General Healey issued a press release and told the Boston Globe that profits should go to “customers as savings, not raising rates.”

In other news, a CT lawmaker is trying to save Millstone from the same fate of other nuclear plants – that is shutting down due to low wholesale energy prices (New Haven Register). Lastly, the EIA released data that power sector emissions dropped below the transportation sector for first time in 4 decades (Utility DIVE).
